Homemade treats for dogs this summer

Summer days call for something cool — and while ice cream might seem like a sweet treat to share, it’s not a good match for your dog’s digestion.

Instead, try these 3 homemade dog treat recipes, made with real food; a simple way to nourish your pup while keeping them cool, hydrated and happy.

Lyka summer snacks recipe

Ingredients:

1 banana
½ cup cooked pumpkin (steamed, boiled or baked — no seasoning)
½ cup chicken or beef bone broth (unsalted, no added seasoning)

Equipment:

Fork
Ice cube tray (silicone works best)

Instructions:

  1. Mash the banana and pumpkin (in separate bowls).

  2. Spoon into your ice cube tray.

  3. Pour bone broth into a few cubes for a savoury twist.

  4. Freeze for at least an hour.

  5. Serve one at a time, or add on top of your dog’s meal for a cooling boost

Note: Always supervise your dog when offering frozen treats, especially if it's their first time.

Why these summer treats are more than just tasty

Dog food should be real food, and there’s nothing better than a homemade treat to share with your best friend on a hot day.

Banana – A gentle source of fibre for healthy digestion and packed with potassium to support your dog’s heart and muscles.
Pumpkin – Naturally rich in beta-carotene and vitamin A, pumpkin (or butternut squash) is both great for cellular health, vision and immunity.
Bone broth – Ultra-hydrating and full of collagen and minerals. Bone broth is like a recovery tonic for joints and great for warm-weather wellness.

More cool real food treat ideas:

  1. Combine lactose-free Greek yoghurt with a few blueberries or raspberries and freeze into cubes.

Not all dogs tolerate dairy, but yoghurt can be a great source of probiotics and protein. Always feed in moderation.

  2. Serve our chunky Roo, Beef, or Chicken meals chilled straight from the fridge or freezer. A refreshing and satisfying way to beat the heat.

  3. Spread our softer Lamb or Turkey meals onto a lick mat and chill before serving. It’s soothing, enriching, and helps slow down eating.
